Setting Music Majors Degree Plans
Purpose: To ensure students see accurate degree plans and academic program reports for their intended major.
Assumptions/Truths:
- The system between admissions and registration that assigns degree plans sets all music majors to the BS. This is not reasonably changeable without trade-offs in other areas.
- All students majoring in music MUST complete an application before being assigned a music major. Exactly how we police this, I'm still unclear on.
Procedure:
- At the professional advisor's first meeting with students during the summer, the professional advisor asks the student's preferred major, and then changes it to the appropriate pre-track in Campus Connection. a. For example, performance majors would be set to one of the BMus’s pre-performance tracks.
- Based on the information collected at the theory diagnostic exam, the student's intended major will be compared against the Campus Connection list of music majors to ensure that their major is selected properly. If it is not, changes will be submitted to Records and Registration.
- At subsequent advising meetings, professional or faculty advisors will verify that the students intended major is correct in campus connection.
- Admission to BMus programs in Composition and Performance requires a specific audition to the degree program. This typically takes place at the end of the first year of study. If, following the audition, the student is not found to be performing at the expected level of a Performance or Composition major, the area should request that the student’s degree track be changed to the Bachelor of Science. This request can be submitted to the professional advisor or the music curriculum coordinator.
